So Many People Have it Backwards

So Many People Have it Backwards

"College is a match to be made, not a prize to be won."
    - Frank Sachs
Thank you Frank, you are so right, and yet, so many people are out to win the prize of a college acceptance, not the prize of a satisfactory experience or favorable outcome. Those people have it backwards and it costs them in many unsuspecting ways.
    1. Students attend the wrong school
    2. Students are unhappy at school
    3. Parents overpay for the school
    4. Outcomes for college are compromised
I understand, it's much easier to chase the big name schools than it is to determine the right match of college to student. A lot more goes into finding the right college match than school name and its dubious ranking.

The idea that winning the admission acceptance is the big prize is like saying the SuperBowl is won on the coin toss, which is false. Rather, the prize for college can only be measured by the student's success and ultimate outcome.

In fact, our own success is measured by the college success and outcome of our students. That's the only way it should be.

    See you there,

      5 Insider Secrets of Colleges

      5 Insider Secrets of Colleges

Colleges are masters at molding their interests
into the beliefs and actions of parents.

That's right, colleges are masters and they view parents as novices who are too willing to go along. That's the bad news as it unnecessarily cost families thousands in dollars along with causing unrealistic expectations for college outcomes.

Here's the good news. There are dozens of  colleges designing fabulous programs to meet the contemporary needs of the workplace and economy. Students who are involved, engaging, and thought-provoking will benefit the most.

But first, let's better understand some of colleges inside secrets with our 5 Insider Secrets of Colleges

Secret # 1- Colleges will protect their "ranking" with every tool, tactic and strategy available. Why so? Because their ranking drives their business model which is often in conflict with your goals. You can read all about rankings here, pg. 28- Dissecting the Big Business of College

Secret # 2- Colleges are trying to maximize what you pay, not minimize it! Their answers to your questions are designed to mold their interests into your beliefs and actions. Why so? Because parents allow them to, simple as that.

Secret # 3- Colleges don't want your child to come in with a study plan, rather, they want to mold it for you. Why so? Because that's their easiest way to put your child on the 5-year graduation plan.

Secret # 4- College admission counselors are not obligated to read through your entire application. Rather, they look for quick reasons to deny. Why so? Because it's a big numbers game and it's easy to spot u
nprepared students, careless FB posts, rushed applications, and weak essays for denials. By the way, they still get to keep your application fee.

Secret # 5- The Admission Office is the Sales & Marketing function of the college. At every turn, they are trying hard to sell you, and they are well-trained to do so. So what's the problem? The college, as the seller, remains in full control here in this transaction. That's backwards! Parents, you need to be in control, not the college, not the guidance counselor, not the travel team coach. You need to treat buying a college education like you would when buying a house, and few do.

Together, I can help you be in control, no longer acquiescing to the college interests. I will empower you to get it right. Would you like to have a call for discussing how we do it?

One Simple Strategy Just Saved $72,000

One Simple Strategy Just Saved $72,000

"It seems today that follow-up is a lost art, but not for CollegeLogic families,
      in fact it's a requirement!

We'll make this short and easy. I've heard parents for a month or two proclaim, "It's finally over, we just submitted out last application!"

      I'm wondering, what's over?

In fact, a new phase to the application process just begins upon submitting the college applications. It's a part of the process that most everyone fails to do.

      It's called follow-up and follow-through!

Here's a quick story from just last week-

A father called me to discuss their situation as they were awaiting application decisions. I said you can't sit around waiting, there is substantive influence your son can still have over the outcome.

      "How so?" he asked.

I said, "By him calling the admission office and setting up a meeting with his admission counselor. Not next week, but TODAY!"

That was last Monday, and his son made the call.

They scheduled a meeting the very next day, Tuesday. His son arrived with 11 questions to ask and well-prepped on his responses to their questions.

They had the meeting at noon. By 1:00, they strolled the campus together, chatting away.

Yesterday, just six days later, the student received a letter of acceptance with a scholarship award of $72,000 over 4 years. The family called me and very excitedly said- "The meeting was a game-changer!"

It can be that simple. Kids need to learn now at an early age the value of follow-up. They don't love it, but who cares, it's a valuable lesson.

Effective and timely follow-up is a game-changer! It's that simple, yet that elusive.

      Unlocking the Full Student Potential

      Unlocking the Full Student Potential

"Continuous effort, not strength or intelligence, is the
key to unlocking our potential." -Winston Churchill

It's one year from now, what would've happened for 2018 to have been a great year?

As the new year rings in, it's time to reflect on the year past and look to the year ahead.

      L
      et's talk college.

In reflecting on 2017, here are my Top 3 takeaways-

      1.
Students continue to wait too long for submitting applications, compromising their acceptances and scholarships.

      2.
Families continue to visit colleges without meeting the key decision-makers, compromising their knowledge of how the college does its business.

      3.
Athletes continue to chase exposure rather than plan evaluations, compromising their college sports opportunity.

In planning for 2018, here are my Top 3 strategies-

      1. My students will have their applications submitted by October 1.

      2. My families will meet with Admissions, Financial Aid, and the Dept. of Anticipated Study during college visits.

      3. My athletes will build meaningful relationships with college coaches beyond casual emails and camp invites.

Making a continuous effort in following our strategic plan unlocks the full potential of our students and athletes. It also forms the difference between getting college right versus making the common and costly mistakes of most families.

To see how we unlock the potential of our students and athletes (parents too), call or email us today.
